Algebra 1/2
Also known as pre-algebra, this course specifically focuses on skills needed to prepare a student for Algebra. The course covers decimals, fractions, percentages, unit conversion, scientific notation, exponents, Roman numerals, base two (binary), simple and compound interest, simple geometry, solutions of linear equations with one unknown, and graphing. Emphasis throughout the year is placed on translating word problems into Algebraic equations.
Alebra I
Algebra I continues with a study of absolute values, solution of two or more equations, polynomials, graphing functions, factoring, the Pythagorean Theorem, statistics, and probability. Students are taught to solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.
Physical Science
The beginning course of our 3-part curriculum covers chemistry (matter) and phyics (forces). In chemistry, students learn atomic structure, the Periodic Table, chemical reactions, and simple stoichiometry and are introduced to organic chemistry. Physics units look at Newton's Laws of Motion, forces and energy, sound and light, and electricity and magnetism.
Earth Science
Following physical science, students study how matter and forces work in our world. Over the year, we study geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy.
Life Science
The concluding science section takes older students into the realms of cellular biology, microscopy, zoology, botany, and ecology. An emphasis in human biology and health concludes the year.
French
Although it is no longer the language of international diplomacy, French is fun to learn. Studying French grammar and syntax helps students better understand English grammar. The approach taken with this course involves interactivity, conversation, and fun.
Spanish
Eleven percent of Californians speak Spanish at home. This is expected to increas to thirty percent by the year 2050. This course teaches basic conversational Spanish and simple elements of grammar in a fun and interactive environment.
Computers
Using the curriculum "FutureKids", this course teaches the basics of Microsoft Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel.
English Composition
Good writing skills are essential to success both in school and in the workplace. This course explores the various forms of expository and creative writing: correspondance, journalistic writing, report writing, and short stories.
Band
Join the students from Our Savior Lutheran School in various band experiences.
