The purpose of this squad is to glorify God by promoting school spirit, encouraging teamwork and cooperation, and developing the qualities of good sportsmanship, confidence, and leadership within the individual.
Practice Rules
Practices will be held on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 P.M. All practices are mandatory. If a Cheerleader must miss a practice, she must turn in an Official Excuse to the Coach prior to the absence. Acceptable excuses are illness, injury, or family emergency.
Cheerleaders must:
- Arrive at practices on time
- Bring Cheer Folder to practices
- Dress in practice uniform:
- Cheer shirt
- OSLS gym shorts
- Socks
- Tennis shoes
- Tied back hair
- Listen to and follow the directions of the Coach
- Maintain a positive and respectful attitude
Game Rules
All games scheduled on the Cheerleading Calendar are mandatory. If a Cheerleader must miss a game, she must turn in an Official Excuse to the Coach prior to the absence. Acceptable excuses are illness, injury, or family emergency. A Cheerleader must be in school for at least half of the school day to perform at that day’game.
Cheerleaders must:
- Arrive to games on time
- Dress in full cheer uniform:
- Turtlneck
- Shell
- Skirt
- Briefs
- Socks
- Tennis shoes
- Tied back hair
- Hair bow
- Pom poms
- Stretch before the game
- Be prepared—use the restroom before the game or at half time
- Pay attention to the games—no talking between cheers
- No snacks until after the game
- Listen to and follow the directions of the Coach
- Maintain a positive and respectful attitude
Special Events
Throughout the year, Cheerleaders are expected to participate in special events such as bake sales, cheer camps, pep rallies, service projects, and fundraising activities. If a Cheerleader must miss a special event, she must turn in an Official Excuse to the Coach prior to the absence. Acceptable excuses are illness, injury, or a family emergency.
Academic Standards
To be eligible to perform at games and participate in special events, Cheerleaders must have an average of 70% or higher in each class recorded on both Progress Reports and Report Cards.
Disciplinary Standards
Cheerleaders are expected to set an example of good behavior and Christian values for fellow students and adults. Misconduct resulting in a detention or suspension from school may be grounds for dismissal from the squad.
Merits System
Cheerleaders earn merit points by following the rules outlined in the Cheerleading Contract and by exhibiting positive behavior. Privileges, such as the following, will be given to Prides based on the number of merit points earned:
- Getting to paint signs, posters, and banners to be displayed at games and events
- Choosing cheers to be included in half-time routines
- Calling cheers at games
- Choreographing motions to new cheers
Cheerleaders receive demerit points when rules from the Cheerleading Contract are broken. Penalties such as the following will be assigned to Prides for demerit points:
- Running laps around the school lawn (weather permitting)
- Doing sit-ups and/or push-ups
- Cleaning up litter from the blacktop area
- Sweeping the gym floor
