Amazed
By PS+, Senior Pastor
Look at the nations and watch, be utterly amazed;
For I am going to do something in your days that you
would not believe, even if you were told.
(Habakkuk 1:5; NIV)
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is full of
accounts where our God predicted or realized the
extraordinary. On every occasion people like you and
me were simply amazed - astounded by the promise
or the outcome. Our annual theme will help us be
Rooted in Grace, Growing in Faith, and Serving
with Joy with this historical and relevant mindset.
At the very least, I pray that this will engender an
authentic astonishment that a perfect, immortal,
eternal being, would become one of us, suffer our
consequences, and then give away perfection,
immortality, and eternity to all who believe. When
people are amazed they can't help but reveal it to
others.
Consider this common occurrence. A person dines at
a restaurant and then shares the experience with
family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. "I was
amazed by the service, the quality, the atmosphere,
etc." This kind of "testimony" produces more
customers for the eatery. Now let's make the
connection. If a person is genuinely astounded by
what Jesus has done for him or her, how many others
will become believers because of the desire to share
the excitement?
Because of our human nature, this mind-set is difficult
to maintain. The passing of time and the
responsibilities of life combined with all that can go
awry can dull our
enthusiasm over the blessings of faith. So, the Lord
also brings about things that we "would not believe,
even if [we] were told." These real life events remind
us of the enormous power and unyielding love of our
God.
For example, our niece averted a debilitating injury last
month. A horse kicked her in the head. She got a
concussion and lacerations on her face. We were
amazed that nothing was broken. Her skull, jaw, and
teeth are all in tact. These real life events remind us
of the enormous power and unyielding love of our God.
I'm confident there are many more stories like this
among all of you. So let's turn our thankfulness and
wonder into an offering of praise, giving credit to
Jesus so that others will be drawn to Him. Let's also
spend this year looking for all the ways His Spirit is
moving among us that we may be continually amazed.
Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will
do amazing things among you. (Joshua 3:5
NIV)

To Keep You in the Loop
By Norm Back, Chair, Lay Governing Board
Last month, I began sharing some of my ideas for
making the Lay Governing Board more effective at its
primary job of Strategic Planning. I mentioned that it
would be a good idea for the LGB to talk to some of
the leading members of our local community, and to
find out how they see OSLM and its mission. The first
of these will be our District President, Dr. Robert
Newton, whom I discussed last month. But we will
also want to talk to people from outside of our own
church body.
One place to look is within the wider Christian
community of Livermore / Pleasanton. There are lots
of churches here, and many of them are thriving and
growing. The fact that we have some disagreements
with them in theology and practice doesn't mean that
they don't have anything to teach us. I think it would be
very worthwhile for the LGB to have discussions with
the pastors of one or more of these churches. We
could ask them such things as: Why are they
growing? What needs are they meeting? What kinds
of innovative programs have they started? What
challenges have they had to overcome? Are they
mission and ministry centered on Biblical teaching
and preaching, or on something else? What advice
do they have for us? And finally, what would they like
to learn from us?
The third set of discussions that the LGB will be
engaging in is with the leaders of the secular
community, particularly with the mayor of Livermore.
In these discussions, we would tend to get an entirely
different perspective. Presumably, the main focus
would be on the good things that we are already doing
for the community, and on the additional needs that
we might be able to fill. Some of these needs we
already know, but there may be others that we have
been unaware of. Are there some new programs that
the mayor would like us to start, and that would make
a real impact on our city? The only way to know is to
ask.
As the LGB conducts these discussions, we will keep
you informed of what we learn from them. The overall
objective, of course, is to find ways to better fulfill our
mission of carrying out the Great Commission here in
Livermore and throughout the world.

Music Opportunities
By Christa Even
September is here again - it's time to put a little more
structure back into our lives. Sure, in California we'll
have many more "hazy" days of summer, but maybe
the "lazy, crazy"ones are done until next summer! As
we get back into more of a routine, it might be good to
reflect on how we are spending our time. I would
encourage you to make music a part
of your life, especially music here at Our Savior. Take
an hour or two to relieve some of the stress in your life
by making music together with others to praise God!
Singing or playing music with others might just help
put a little bounce in your step throughout the week -
ask any choir member how many great songs go
through his or her head during the choir season!
Even better, those songs will have an uplifting
message of praise or prayer to God, and might speak
to your heart just when you need it.
Musical opportunities abound at Our Savior for people
of all ages; as you look through these possibilities,
feel free to give Christa Even a call at 447-1246, ext.
231 for more information on any group.

ECDC News
By Sara Hall
God said . . . and it was so. And God saw that it
was good. Genesis 1:9b and 10b
God was there in the beginning when the world
began. He said and it was so, and as you know, it was
good. I have complete faith that God is there at all our
beginnings. As we begin our 41st year of Our Savior
Preschool, God's presence surrounds us.
Due to the high number of four-year-olds enrolled this
year, we are adding an afternoon four-year-old class
and pray that God blesses this new adventure.
As we begin our new year, we have been blessed with
a wonderful and supportive P.T.O. who has purchased
a shade structure which has been placed over our
sand box. The P.T.O. also purchased a sandbox car
and diggerator. (Our Savior Preschool would not be
complete without a diggerator!)
This year, God has blessed us with wonderful
teachers to shepherd the little lambs He has sent
us:
Three-Year-Old Teachers
Sarah Gonzales
Mary Jo Rittmann
Three-Year-Old Assistant Teachers
Anna Buyer
Jann Cheim
Jeaniece James
Four-Year-Old Teachers
Kathy Barrera

Donna Martin

We will begin our year getting to know each other,
exploring colors and learning how God created our
world. As you have new beginnings, whether it is the
beginning of the school year or simply the beginning
of a new day, know that God is right there with you
from the start, waiting to Amaze you!

original floor, to meet the narthex floor) has been
poured. Work has begun on the framing for the new
roof, the supporting columns for the second floor, and
the decorative brickwork at the windows. We continue
to meet the schedule.
Please offer your prayers that God will continue
blessing us with good weather and a safe operation.

Elders Become Facilitators
By Pastor Phil
The transformation of Our Savior Lutheran Ministries
continues as the Elders prayerfully develop a method
for helping people employ their gifts and talents. After
participating in a Spiritual Gifts assessment, this
group of leaders divided itself into various categories
of ministry:
Leadership (i.e. Administration)
· Chairman: Bob Edmeyer
· Vice-Chairmen: Jeff Greenhagen,
Bob Greenwalt, Don Young
Worship
· Facilitator: Larry Gomes
· Core Member: Herb Street
Nurture
· Facilitator: Ken Gong
· Core Members: Matt Dillon, Larry
Gomes, Don Young
Care
· Facilitator: Dave Dorn
· Core Members: Chris Nelson,
Herb Street
Encouragement
· Facilitator: Mike Marchini
· Core Members: Bob Greenwalt,
Roger Kinter
Outreach
· Facilitator: Roger Kinter
· Core Members: Dave Dorn, Bob
Edmeyer
Assimilation
· Facilitator: Matt Dillon
· Core Members: Ken Gong, Jeff
Greenhagen, Mike Marchini
The biblical basis for this approach is two-fold. First,
the Elder position is a humanly instituted office, which
most Missouri-Synod Lutherans use as
an "extension" of the Pastor (Acts 6:1-4). From one
congregation to another, the number, responsibilities,
and structure vary, based on local tradition and need.
Second, Moses' father-in-law (Jethro) advised him to
divide up responsibility among capable, God-fearing,
trustworthy men (Exodus 18:13-26). This wisdom
was implemented and blessed by the Lord
(Deuteronomy 1:9-18).
As the congregation continues to grow, this new
approach enables the Elders to remain a "small
group" without becoming overwhelmed by the amount
of mission and ministry it generates. Each one is a
facilitator, and/or a core group member, and/or a
willing servant.
As "facilitators" or "core members," they are
knowledgeable about what is happening in their area,
what the priorities are, and where people can get
involved. Meanwhile, as willing servants, they also
participate in worship assistance, visitation, teaching,
etc, based on their spiritual gifts and availability.
Finally, this will also improve communication with
stewards, and implementation of lay-led ministry.
For example, if a person has a passion for outreach
and a great idea, he or she can be "plugged in"
through the Outreach Facilitator. At the same time, if
someone has a concern about the care of the
workers, he or she can contact the Care Facilitator for
help.
As with many other things at Our Savior, it will take
time to get accustomed to this mode of operation.
Ultimately, let's plan to be amazed by what the Holy
Spirit will accomplish with it.

Business Buzz
By Joe Ryno
Please click here for the Financial
Report for July.
The mission pledge is current and all expenses have
been paid.
General Giving for July was up 15.7% from budget.
What a great start to the new fiscal year!
The church, school and early childhood center all had
positive net incomes for July. We should see some
fluctuation in that as curriculum bills and other start up
costs are paid in August. Expenses were better than
the plan mainly due to losing a number of teachers
who were paid out in June and recognized on last
year's budget.
Balances in our checking and savings accounts total
$282,841 which includes $10,605 in the Building Up -
Reaching Out fund. The Church's portion of the
mortgage as well as architectural fees are being paid
out of this fund. Monthly pledges needed to make the
mortgage payment are $22,000. In July, we received
$24,077; however, funds normally set aside for this
account were contributed to the Thrivent GivingPlus
campaign in the additional amount of $3100 for a total
of $27,177. We are running above target.
The Thrivent GivingPlus program has generated
$113,815 for the benefit of the Ministry Center. This
includes $33,859 matching funds received from
Thrivent through June.

Launch Sunday
September 9, 2007 will be a big day at Our
Savior Lutheran Ministries! This is the Sunday that we
will be "launching" our new theme for the
year, "Amazed," based on Habakkuk 1:5 and Joshua
3:5. Join us at the 9 a.m. service as we will
be installing and commissioning workers in every
ministry. After the service, there will be food,
fellowship, and sign-ups (in the gym) for Sunday
School, Diners' Club, and information about other
ministries going on at Our Savior. You will also be
able to get a copy of the new pictorial directory.
Come and see everything that's going on this year
and be AMAZED!

Meet Our New Receptionist!
The Ministries has created a new position in an effort
do a better job at meeting and greeting anyone who
comes onto our campus or places a phone call to Our
Savior. Traci Sprayberry has taken on the role of
receptionist, so you will see her smiling face as you
enter the school office, and you will hear her cheery
voice when you place a call to the Ministries. Traci's
job will be to direct your call to the correct individual, or
if you come to the campus, she will make sure that
you have your questions answered or direct you to the
person you came to see.
Prior to taking on this role, Traci was the Director of
the Extended Child Care for OSLM for four years, so
she is very familiar with the Ministries. Traci is also
very busy at home, as she and her husband Tom have
two children, Cadence (two-years-old) and Layla (6-
months-old). The Sprayberry family attends
Cornerstone Fellowship.
Welcome, Traci, and may God bless you in your new
role!

Diners' Club Kick-Off
The 2007-2008 Diners' Club is taking sign-ups on
Sundays at fellowship time during August and
September followed by a kick-off potluck on
Saturday, September 22 at 6 p.m. in the
ECDC.
What is Diners' Club? It is a fellowship opportunity to
get to know other members of Our Savior through
occasional dinners in each other's homes. It's very
simple - six people meet and dine together in one of
their homes (the host). Hosts prepare the meal, while
guests bring salad or dessert. Dinners are held on
approximately a monthly basis (October, then after
Christmas through the spring) at dates and times
mutually agreed by the diners. Dinner assignments
are made to ensure that dinner groups change each
time.
Diners' Club is for both couples and singles - and no
one is required to host.
What's the Kick-off Potluck? This year, it's a special
meal based on foods that people of the Bible might
have eaten. God's people had a marvelously varied
cuisine - including desert nomad, Egyptian,
Canaanite, Babylonian, Assyrian, Persian, Syrian,
Greek, and Roman meals. They include foods
prepared for common families as well as those
prepared in palaces of the Pharaohs, Kings David and
Solomon, Nebuchadnezzar, Xerxes, Herod, and
Caesar Augustus.
After research, a large collection of appropriate
recipes have been developed using commonly
available ingredients that fall in categories of
appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, salads, and
desserts. Sign-up includes selecting recipes to bring
to the potluck. (This is a time to experiment and be
adventurous - no one knows what Biblical-age
recipes should taste like, so whatever turns out is
right!)

memory.

Photo Directories Coming!
By Laura Gong
The directories are expected to arrive and be available
for each family (not just those photographed) to pick
up after the 9 a..m. service on September 9,
which is our ministry "Launch Sunday." Get your copy
and use it to get to know your "Faith Family" better.
Then make it a goal to meet one new person each
Sunday!
After September 9, the directories will be available in
the church office. If you missed the professional
photograph sessions, are new to OSLM, or at any time
wish to update your photo, please contact the church
office to arrange for a volunteer to take a "snapshot"
for future directory updates.
Also, we are looking for a volunteer with some
computer experience to coordinate annual updates to
incorporate all new photos and data together and a
possible on-line directory. Please contact the church
office if you are interested.
A speical thank you to Debbie Marchini and Dave Dorn
for planning and designing the activity pages of our
new directory!

Recap of Vacation Bible Camp
By Sara Hall
We had a wonderful time at
Vacation Bible Camp this summer.
We hung out with old friends and made some new
ones. We had over 100 kids each day (10 new
families from the community!) joined us on our "Quest
for Truth."
We began our adventure each day with Dakota Joe
and Digger in our morning rally, and traveled together
with our quest group as we searched for clues that
were able to "Tell us the Truth." We visited faraway
lands as we saw the birth of Jesus, witnessed him
being baptized in the Jordan River, watched him heal
the sick, and learned that he rose from the dead to be
our Savior.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this camp a
success!

Women's Conference
Do things in your life sometimes get chaotic and out of
hand? Do you ever feel frightened and
alone? Even though things seem out of hand, they are
not; you are in God's Caring Hands. That
is the theme of a women's conference to be held on
Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Prince of
Peace Lutheran Church in Fremont, CA. Elaine Bickel,
a nationally known humorous and
inspirational speaker and author, will be the special
presenter.
Elaine, of Millington, Michigan, is a noted author of
CPH curriculum materials for Sunday
Schools, Vacation Bible Schools, and Lutheran day
schools. She is also experienced as a youth
and family life director and a trained coordinator
for "Rainbows for All God's Children," a support
group for children who are experiencing loss due to
death or divorce.
She is the author of three Bible study books: Living
with Compulsive Behavior, Growing as a
Christian Mother, and Roots and Wings: A
Parent's Challenge, published by CPH. She has
written for the Lutheran Woman's Quarterly,
Guideposts, and My Devotions. She serves
as principal at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millington,
and is a member of the Board of Regents of
Concordia University, Ann Arbor. In 1994 she was the
recipient of the Saginaw News Crystal
Apple Award for teaching excellence. Elaine and her
husband, Jim, have two children.
Under the theme Women in HIS Caring
Hands, Elaine will use her trademark hilarious
stories
and touching personal experiences to assure women
that God's hands guide and uphold them in
all circumstances. Take advantage of this unique
opportunity!
The conference will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 3:00
p.m. The registration cost is $20.00, and
includes coffee with morning refreshments, and
lunch. All women are invited to come for a very
special day of inspiration, laughter, music and
fellowship. The registration deadline is October 1,
2007. Registration forms are available in the church
office, or online at
www.cnhlwml.org/cnhlwml/regional_events.
