Amazed by Participation in His Mission
    By Pastor Phil

Glenna Sanlis (Executive Administrative Assistant to the Senior Pastor) and Carla Gomes (Administrative Assistant of Finance and Data) recently compiled an activity report of our faith community. Steve Christopher (Director of Spiritual Care and Growth) sifted and sorted it to make some observations.

This was not an exercise in number crunching. Rather, it's more like an annual physical when a doctor is taking vital signs. Acts 2:42-47 is the basis for our "check up."

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (NIV)

The following is an edited version of the observations.

Strength in Numbers-The overall activity of OSLM looks positive, as 60% of the confirmed members are involved in at least one or more activities, and over 1/3 are involved in 3 or more ministry activities. We seem to break the old 80/20 rule, where 20% of the members do 80% of the activities. While this reports shows 35% are very involved, it also reveals that 40% appear to have no activity.

Missing Our Target-A Critical Target that OSLM has focused on this past year and a half is the "18-40 year old" group. This data shows that over 60% of this age group has no activity beyond worship, and that the overall average of this group is less than one activity among the 103 people reviewed. There are fourteen people (13.5%) in this grouping with a high activity rating, far below the OSLM total of 35%.

On the Bubble-The grouping of 40-49 year olds totals 107 members, second only to the 50-64 year olds. 21% of this group is at the greatest level of participation, and 56% are minimally involved. This age group seems split between being highly involved at OSLM or slightly or not involved at all.

Youth on the Move-While only 11% of the confirmed membership, these 13-17 year olds showed a 66% involvement in one or more activity, higher than the OSLM overall of 60%. There were 37% in the very engaged activity category, also higher than the OSLM overall total. The average involvement of the 13-17 year olds was equal to the 40-49 year old grouping, and is only exceeded by the super seniors.

Super Seniors!-While those just barely in their 50's may not consider themselves "seniors," the group of those at OSLM over 50 years old totaled 223, which is 42% of the confirmed membership. The average activity of those 50 and older is strong. The 65-74 group is by far the most active grouping of people at OSLM! There were 101 (45%) people over 50 years of age with a high level of ministry activity.

For a complete analysis of the report, please contact the church office.

Thank God for the number of people the Spirit has called into our fellowship! Let's be Amazed that He has inspired so many to be involved in His mission. Finally, let's be resolved to continue supporting one another so that our participation in His mission will continue to grow, and in turn, so will His kingdom.

    Serving with Joy,

    PS+

To Keep You in the Loop
By Norm Back, Chair, Lay Governing Board

I would like to thank all of you who were willing to spend an hour of your Sunday afternoon at the Voters' Assembly meeting on January 27. The meeting was well attended, it was short (almost exactly an hour), it accomplished its main purpose - to elect two members to the Nominating Committee - and I hope you found it to be informative. The more intimate setting in the ECDC was helpful, and I'm sure the pizza didn't hurt either. I was about to say that we should have Voters' meetings in the ECDC more often, but then I remembered that the next regular meeting will most likely be in the MINISTRY CENTER. (Alleluia!)

Now that we have a Nominating Committee, the next step will be for them to select a slate of qualified candidates for election to the Lay Governing Board. So if you get a call from a member of the Committee, please prayerfully consider being a candidate. The LGB needs you and the unique talents and insights that you can bring to the table.

On a different subject, we will soon be asking you for your input to OSLM's 2008-2009 Critical Targets and Goals. This year we are going to try something new: an on-line survey. It should only take a few minutes of your time, and you can do it in the comfort of your own home. But it is very important. Without your input, it would be all too easy for the LGB to go off on a tangent and decide on goals that the congregation doesn't really want and won't support. But with your input, we can be confident that we are going in the right direction. So please take the time to respond to the survey. By the way, hard copy versions will be available for those of you would prefer to do the survey that way. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

    Re-enrollment / Registration
It is time to register for next year. The school year 2008-2009 will begin in just six short months! Registrations for continuing students were sent home with students. However, on March 1, 2008, registrations will be open to the public on a first come, first served basis.

If you would like a registration form, please contact the school office, 447-2082.

    Accreditation Update
The Accreditation Visiting Team was unable to be here in February due to health reasons of the Chair of the group. Since there is a "certification" required to lead a visiting team and since the self-study needs to be read and reviewed prior to the visit, the Accreditation Visit scheduled had to be postponed. This is (to say the least) disappointing and discouraging. However, we have re-scheduled the visit with a new Team Chair for April 27 - 30, 2008. So mark your calendars now and reserve these dates for accreditation related events.

    PTO AUCTION
Set aside the date of April 19 for the Annual PTO Auction. In the past, this fundraiser (besides being a great night out!) has purchased playground apparatus, backstops, computers, digital cameras and projectors, etc. We have numerous suggestions as to what can be funded for this year. But it all starts with YOU being at the Auction. Further information will be coming your way soon, but keep this date clear: April 19, 2008 - AUCTION!

Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. John 13:1

As the Lenten season comes to an end and we prepare to celebrate Easter, this verse came to mind. Jesus came and did what he knew needed to be done, and then he was able to go home to His Father. What a feeling! When things are hard and we feel like giving up, what an awesome feeling to know that we too have a Father waiting with open arms to welcome us home. During those times of hardship, Christ has left His Holy Spirit with us to guide us with His Word. We just need to take the time to read His Word and listen to what He is saying. The children love this time of year as we learn about spring and how God makes things new. It is our prayer for you that you will take time this Easter to read God's Word and take time this spring to look at all that God has made new.

We ended the month of February with visits from a dentist and firefighters. We enjoyed learning how God has given us many people that care for us. We begin March by celebrating National Lutheran Schools Week with the K-8 school. It is the one time of year that we all join together for opening devotions and a pep rally. The preschoolers really enjoy seeing all the "big kids," and it is amazing to see all 500 children together. It helps me to realize the mission that exists right here on our campus five days a week.

As March continues, we will learn about the circus as well as farm animals. We will end our month celebrating Easter with our annual egg hunt and Easter chapel. It has become a tradition at the preschool to visit the K-8 classrooms and share the joy of Easter as we shout "Jesus is Alive!" Enjoy the month of March and shout with us: "Jesus is Alive!"

    Ministry Center Building Committee
    By Glenn Strahl

The window frames were delivered on February 11. This means we are on schedule for completion late March or early April. There is a lot of finish work yet to be done inside and some of the landscaping must be done before occupancy is allowed. Then we will have a lot of moving to do. We will keep you posted on progress.

Regardless of occupancy, the Ministry Center dedication will be on April 6, 2008 at the end of the 9 a.m. worship service. Stay tuned . . . the date for the Grand Opening will be coming soon!

Please click here for the Financial Report for December and also the Fiscal Year-to-Date Report.

The mission pledge is current and all expenses have been paid.

General Giving for December was down 3.8% from the budget projection; however, it is up 15% year-to- date. This continues to be great news for this budget year; however, general giving will need to continue as usual or better to maintain our budget requirements.

The church has a positive net income of $11,643 year- to-date. The school shows a negative net income of $69,035 primarily due to the downsized enrollment. However, this should improve beginning in February as we process registrations for the new school year. At this time, the Early Childhood Center also has a positive net income of $6,335.

Balances in our checking and savings accounts total $188,092 which includes $26,560 in the Building Up - Reaching Out fund. The Church's portion of the mortgage is being paid out of this fund. Monthly pledges needed to make the mortgage payment are $22,000. In January, we received $22,702; however, funds normally set aside for this account were contributed to the Thrivent GivingPlus campaign in the additional amount of $420 for a total of $23,122.

    Easter Brunch is Coming!
    By Steve Christopher

This year, as we have the last several years, Our Savior will be serving an Easter Brunch on Sunday, March 23. The brunch will be held in the gym and begin around 10:15 a.m. following the 9 a.m. service. We will continue with the tradition of the men of the congregation preparing and serving this special meal on this special day!

We are looking for a lot of "good men" (young and old) who can volunteer to do everything from the purchase of supplies to the set-up, cooking, serving, clean-up, and decorating! The men will do it all! If you are interested in helping out in any way, please show up on Saturday, March 22 at 9 a.m. in the gym to help with set-up, decorations and other preparations. If you have any questions, call Steve Christopher in the church office, 447-1246, ext. 228.

    New Neighbors
    By Laura Gong

We'll soon have new neighbors. Let's welcome them! The 30 units of the Carmen Avenue Apartments down the street will soon be occupied.

Rather than waiting for them to come visit, we'd like to proactively welcome them to the neighborhood and invite them to visit our family for worship and a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning.

We are coordinating an effort to deliver bread and a welcome package to these neighbors during March, and we need some volunteers to help:

    • Bake one or more loaves of bread (any type, even banana or pumpkin . . .)
    • Take the bread and welcome package to each resident (No need to visit unless invited; dropping off is fine.)

If God is nudging you to assist, please give your name to Laura Gong or to the church office at 447-1246.

    Joe's Tidbits

Through the Simply GivingŪ program, your gifts are made through a pre-authorized withdrawal from your bank account. You determine the frequency of your automatic gift: weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly - the option is yours. Your gift is deposited into our bank account on the same day it is withdrawn from your account.

The Simply GivingŪ program is a reliable, safe way to move your stewardship plan into action. It allows you to share your gifts through planned giving and activates your generosity into ongoing stewardship. Because your gift is given consistently, you won't need to play "catch-up" at year-end or worry about forgotten checkbooks or missed Sunday offerings. But you're not the only one that benefits. Our congregation benefits from steady, more predictable revenues throughout the year, more efficient bookkeeping, and great confidence in meeting its financial commitments.

Won't you join with many of our members who are already experiencing the benefits of this program?

For more information or for enrollment forms, please contact the church office, 447-1246.

    Easter Egg Extravaganza
    By Sara Hall

All children ages 2-through fourth grade are invited to come and enjoy a morning of fun! On Saturday, March 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, join us in the ECDC building for making fun Easter crafts and to hunt for eggs. This is a family affair and all are welcome. Bring your friends and family and join us for this fun Easter Egg Extravaganza!

All K.F.C. and F.I.S.H. youth are invited to hide the eggs for the younger children. (The High School Youth will be stuffing the eggs during the Thursday, March 13 Youth Night.)

As you can see, we are getting the entire Ministry involved in this event. We need everyone's help! There will be boxes in the back of the sanctuary to collect your donated plastic eggs as well as candy and fun items that will fit into an Easter egg. The boxes will be in the sanctuary through March 9. Your help to make this event a success is greatly appreciated.

    E-DiBS

(The following article is reprinted from the February 2008 issue of the Evangelgram, a monthly E- publication highlighting outreach efforts in LCMS congregations.)

New Year's Day not only rang in 2008, it also marked the first anniversary of E-DiBS (the Electronic Daily Bible Study). E-DiBS delivered its first video streaming Bible lesson via e-mail to hundreds of recipients on Jan. 1, 2007. Since then, E-DiBS has been picked up by dozens of LCMS churches and is now being delivered to more than 5,000 people per day.

E-DiBS was founded by Terry Sherry, congregation president of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Orange, California. While working with the St. Paul's ministry staff trying to find ways to get congregation members more committed and active in the ministry, Terry developed E-DiBS as a means to be able to get church members into a consistent daily Bible study. "I talked with several members of St. Paul's, asking why they were not studying the Bible daily" Terry said. "The common answers were expected: not enough time and distractions from life's daily happenings. "What I did not expect was the number of people who told me they had tried reading the Bible, but felt like they did not understand what they were reading, leading to frustration. How long will people continue to do something that frustrates them?"

While driving in rush hour traffic on a congested Southern California freeway one day, Terry was given the inspiration (by the Holy Spirit) to meld the power of the Internet and e-mail with the power of God's Word. "I approached our previous associate pastor at St. Paul's, Rev. Paul Stark, with the idea of having him write and videotape a series of short eight- to ten- minute Bible studies where we pick a book from the Bible and go through that book chapter by chapter, verse by verse," Terry said. "We tried to develop studies that eliminated the excuses. These lessons are short, convenient to get to, and include a verse by verse narrative explaining what God is telling us."

The formula worked and E-DiBS has received rave reviews from pastors and congregation members. People who have tried all kinds of Bible studies unsuccessfully have found a new way to start their day in God's Word-and have been able to stick with it daily. After a month of lessons, E-DiBS was opened to other churches in the area so their congregations could be in a consistent Bible study. Since its humble beginnings, E-DiBS has spread to dozens of churches from California to Washington to Minnesota and is growing daily.

E-DiBS also had a very unexpected benefit - evangelism. People who might never open up to others about their faith have absolutely no problem forwarding the daily e-mails to family and friends. E- DiBS is being forwarded all over the world, with people using it to study God's Word in China, Africa, New Zealand, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. E-DiBS is available to anyone, anywhere, who has Internet access.
