WANT TO BE AN ANGEL?

Yes, we can all be an angel this Christmas by participating in the annual Angel Tree gift program sponsored by the Katrina Committee here at Our Savior.  The tree is in the back of the church this morning filled with angels.  Please stop by and select an angel of your choice.  Then, make the purchases desired; suggestions and sizes are given on the angel.  Return the wrapped gifts to the church office by December 20.  AND, if you want to help deliver gifts, please indicate your willingness to this rewarding service when you sign up.

You may continue to bring your NATIVITY SCENES to share with others this Advent season.  There is plenty of room for more.  The crèches are displayed along the back windows of the sanctuary.  Please identify your nativity scene with your family name so we can include a name tag.  They will be on display at the first, second, and third Advent services through Sunday, December 17.  You may pick up your set on Monday, December 18, to take home for your enjoyment.

Join us today in the Gym from 3:00-5:00 p.m. for a FAMILY ADVENT EVENT (geared to families with children ages 2 – 12). We will be frosting cookies, creating Christmas Decorations and hearing the Christmas story.  This promises to be a wonderful family event helping you get your heart and mind ready for the Birth of our Savior.

WOMEN OF OUR SAVIOR…February 23-25, 2007, is RETREAT WEEKEND, a time when the women of Our Savior will travel to Santa Cruz to unwind, enjoy the peace and beauty of the ocean, have fun and fellowship with other women of faith, and spend some time in worship and prayer.  If you’re looking for a break from the demands of a hectic personal and/or professional life, perhaps a weekend away is just what you need!

Connie Schramm from St. John’s Lutheran School, in Orange, CA will be our guest speaker.

This year we’ll be staying at the Villa Maria del Mar retreat center.  You may view the retreat center online at www.villamariadelmar.org.  Most of the accommodations will house 2 women per room, but there are a limited number of single rooms available that will be given out on a first come, first served basis.  The cost of the weekend is $215 which pays for 2 nights lodging and 6 meals.

To reserve your spot, look for the reservation table after the service today or call Kathy Newman.  Reservations will be taken throughout December until our limited space is filled.

MEN OF OUR SAVIOR…

Are you trying to decide what to get that special woman in your life for Christmas?  How about giving her a weekend away to unwind, enjoy the peace and beauty of the ocean, have fun and fellowship with other women of faith, and spend some time in worship and prayer.   If this sounds like the perfect gift, then sign her up for the Women’s Retreat.

 Concordia University Capsule

Did you know?  Concordia has an ethics club that offers students the opportunity to learn valuable research and critical-thinking skills and enjoy the excitement of preparing for competition.  The club recently traveled to Utah Valley State College for a regional competition, called an ethics bowl.  In preparation for the competition, students spend hours in research to develop arguments based on national topics.  The topics include real-life ethical situations involving such things as emergency contraception, national security and violence in entertainment.  The team defends its position and is judged for clarity, focus and thoughtfulness of the arguments.  This year the team competed very well, losing matches by single digits out of 300 points.  “Though the team did not advance to the national competition, the most important thing is that the students benefited from the competition and had fun,” stated faculty advisor Dr. Susan Bachman.  “Our scores were very high.  They spoke well.  They learned.”  Christy Foos, a junior at Concordia and president of the club, said she uses what she learns in the ethics bowls in her classes.  She is learning how to speak better and how to analyze real-life situations.  “The experience you get through ethics bowl is invaluable,” she said.  “It gives me an extra perspective.
