There will be a SPECIAL VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY MEETING this afternoon, September 30, at 3:00 p.m. in the Gym.  The purpose of this meeting is to discuss and vote on a set of proposed changes to our Constitution and Bylaws.  This will be the first of two meetings that are required in order to ratify these changes.  Since the proposed changes are rather extensive, it would be helpful for you to study them prior to the meeting.  Therefore, if you have not already done so, please pick up one of the marked-up copies of the Constitution and Bylaws that are available in the back of the sanctuary.  These are color-coded to make them easier to understand:  red is used for “real” changes, and teal for “cosmetic” changes.  Please plan on attending this important meeting.  Child care will be available.

WILLING HANDS tomorrow from

9 a.m. until noon.  Anyone who has some time available and would like to help with keeping our facility clean and neat is welcome.  More volunteers would be  greatly appreciated.

Introduce your family and friends to other cultures through activities and

October 7, at  2 p.m.

The 8th Annual OKTOBERFEST AND GOLF TOURNAMENT is next Sunday, October 7.  Tee times begin at noon.

Members of a drama team from COVENANT PLAYERS will be here to assist in our worship services next Sunday -- 9 a.m. and 11:30 Sequel Workshop.  We need to find a place for two people to stay, either in one home or in two different homes, on Saturday evening and to provide meals for them on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.  If you are interested in housing someone, please contact the church office at 447-1246.

Thank you, Ministry Audit Team!

Please join the Lay Governing Board in offering a HUGE thank you to the ministry audit team:  Edna Carpenter, Pete Oliver and Jim Hermerding (lead auditor).  This team put in many hours over the last few months assessing the ministry.  The audit was comprehensive and revealed that the ministry’s finances and operations are well-handled.  Thank you to Edna, Pete and Jim for giving their time and talents in service to the Lord through this activity!

Coming up:  two new Sunday morning Bible classes

ä LIFE ISSUES:  What the Bible Has to Say about Abortion, Suicide, Capital Punishment, and War

Issues involving life and death are hot topics today, both in the political realm and in our own personal lives.  Various church bodies, including The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, have weighed in on the morality of such things as abortion, embryonic stem cell research, assisted suicide, the war in Iraq, and the death penalty.  But what does the Bible have to say?  In this class, we will try to answer that question, not only by looking at individual issues, but also by studying the larger context of what the Word of God tells us about the origin and purpose of life.  Norman Back will be teaching this class, which starts Sunday, October 7, in Room 17.

ä  EFFECTIVE FAMILIES SEMINAR

What is a “successful” or “effective” family?  How do you know if you are doing something good within your family setting?  What does scripture say about “family principles” on certain topics?

These questions and others will be explored starting Sunday, October 14, and continuing into December.  The class will be taught by Steve Christopher, Director of Spiritual Care and Growth, and meet in Room 19.

If you shop at Safeway or PW Supermarket and you are not registered with escrip, please be sure to turn your 10% BACK TO SCHOOL receipts into the church office by Friday, October 12th for redemption.  This is free money for our Ministry so please check your receipts!  Already registered with escrip?  Then your 10% BACK TO SCHOOL donations have been tracked automatically through your Safeway or PW Supermarket grocery card.  To register and begin earning free money for our Ministry every time you shop, visit www.escrip.com.

Our CNH District of LCMS is sponsoring a health ministry convocation to promote wellness within congregations and communities.  It will be held on November 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Town and Country Lutheran Church, Sacramento. There will be 12 workshops to choose from, including How to start a Health Ministry Program, Creating a Welcome Place for the Physically Challenged, Keeping Church Workers Well and Healthy, Aging Well – Start Now!  Cost is $25 per attendee.  Deadline: October 15.  If interested, please call Marilyn Janzen, 447-9603.

THERE IS STILL TIME!  If you are a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, you still have the opportunity to increase the impact of your support to Our Savior Lutheran School(s) for this calendar year.  Through the GivingPlus® Program, your donations made out to our school will be used towards the Ministry Center and supplemented by Thrivent Financial.

Thrivent Financial contributes $1 for every $2 that a Thrivent Financial member donates, based on program guidelines.  Although this program is not available this year for Associate Members, members can donate up to $600 per school, per member, each year.

For example:  A household with two Thrivent Financial members can contribute up to $1200 for each member.  $600 can be contributed towards the School and $600 towards the Early Childhood Center.  Thrivent will then match each contribution up to $300.  If $600 is not within your budget – don’t worry.  Thrivent will still contribute $1 for every $2 gift.

Not only will you be helping support the Ministry Center, your gift is also tax-deductible.

Forms are available in the church office.

WALK FOR HUNGER: to benefit two local agencies which are feeding those within our communities – The Open Heart Kitchen and the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

A five-mile walk around Pleasanton is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 28, commencing at

1 p.m. at Lynnewood United Methodist Church.  They are seeking support and encouragement from family and friends.  Checks may be made out to Lynnewood United or Asbury United Methodist Church.  Sign-up and pledge sheets are available in the church office here at Our Savior.  The deadline is October 8.
